Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts

After attending a hand-lettering workshop at House Industries, I had the opportunity to design the logotype as well as the marketing brochure for CIC’s Diversity Institute. The images show my design process as well as the final printed brochure. The logotype will be used throughout the two-year project.

Led by Beverly Daniel Tatum, president emerita of Spelman College, the Council of Independent Colleges’ “Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts” institute addresses major issues that drive today’s unrest on campus, including protests directed at public policy, social inequity, bias, and identity that sometimes become disruptive or even violent.

"Power of Liberal Arts" Public Information Campaign

Winner of the Silver Anvil award given by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) in recognition of public relations best practices, two EXCEL awards given by the Association Media and Publishing in recognition of excellence and leadership in nonprofit association media, publishing, marketing, and communications, and named one of the top 50 grassroots campaigns in the country by CQ Roll Call

The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) launched its “Power of Liberal Arts” campaign to address misperceptions about liberal arts education and to promote liberal arts colleges. CIC aims to influence the national conversation by reaching not only leaders of CIC’s member colleges and universities but also prospective college students, parents, and high school guidance counselors.

Campaign print pieces include a media kit used by member presidents and PR directors in meetings with local media, and a poster and college directory for guidance counselors to share with their students. CIC also created a mobile-responsive website and a Twitter feed featuring cartoon avatars Libby and Art (get it?).

Campaign Media Kit

Campaign Media Kit

The signature print publication of the campaign was designed for member presidents and public relations directors to use the information in meetings with local media and to help promote the liberal arts and private colleges to prospective students and their parents. CIC, however, routinely shares the media kit more broadly with national journalists, foundation officers, and high school guidance counselors.

“Liberal Arts in Action” Microsite

Developed with the help of Old River Creative, the www.LiberalArtsLife.org website draws on campaign materials to tell a story about the value of a liberal arts education through video clips, photographs, speaker quotations, and animated data visualizations. The site is designed to appeal to prospective students and to help parents and high school counselors as they guide students through the college selection and application process.

NACAC Conference Materials

NACAC Conference Materials

In an effort to influence expand the campaign's audience by reaching out to high school guidance counselors, CIC had a booth at the 2014 National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) Conference. A variety of pieces such as signage, postcards, and posters were created for this event.

In order to drive traffic to the booth, conference attendees could enter a drawing for a free iPad Mini if they tweeted a selfie with campaign avatars Libby & Art.

CIC's Guidebook App

After providing back-up support to the Council of Independent Colleges’ (CIC) conference team, I noticed that our print materials were being underutilized and that more attendees were carrying mobile devices. Given assorted budget and workflow constraints, we decided to use the Guidebook platform, and I spearheaded the development CIC’s first event app.

App usage has grown steadily since the implementation of our first app in 2012, and we now annually create apps for CIC’s four largest conferences. User feedback includes, “I love the app. Though I used the book at a ‘prelude,’ I used the app almost exclusively during the conference…It worked very well.” and “Thanks for taking a technology-forward approach!”

Each app is branded to match the conference marketing materials.

College Media Conference

The College Media Conference is hosted annually by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). Previously under the direction of Keith Moore Associates, CIC took over the conference in 2009.

Since the conference attendees—primarily communications officers and public and media relations directors—were a new and younger constituency for CIC, I rebranded the conference with a fresh and more youthful design as well as created a new logo for the conference.

In recognition of the 25th anniversary of the conference, CIC moved the conference from Baltimore, Maryland to Washington, DC in 2011. Changing to a more expensive locale reduced the marketing budget, so the layout of the conference program was re-envisioned as a compact tri-fold layout in order to reduce production costs. This 2011 College Media Conference program received the AssociationTRENDS Silver Award for Convention Programs.

Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows Program

Through a week-long residential program of classes, seminars, workshops, lectures, and informal discussions, the Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows program brings prominent artists, diplomats, journalists, business leaders, and other nonacademic professionals to campuses across the United States for substantive dialogue with students and faculty members.

Program marketing includes annual brochure mailings, a direct mail newsletter update, and print and digital ads which run in higher education news outlets.

These charts were featured in the R+B (Research and Books) section of the Council of Independent College's semi-annual news magazine, The Independent. As one of the primary sources of information for CIC's member colleges and university leaders, the magazine's distribution averages 3,000 recipients of the print edition and nearly 8,000 digital readers.

Teaching European Art in Context Brochures

Funded with the generous support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, the “Teaching European Art in Context” seminars provide an opportunity for art historians, studio artists, and faculty members in related fields to spend a week at a renowned museum studying exhibition galleries and private collections as well as refining their teaching strategies on a particular subject matter. The brochures are the primary marketing method for this program and always garner a large number of applicants to the program.

British Landscape Painting Seminar

In partnership with the Yale Center for British Art at Yale University, the Council of Independent Colleges held a seminar on “Landscape and Identity in Britain and the United States (1770–1914)” for faculty members who teach art history at institutions without large campus museums or proximity to major art museums.

The brochure was printed on 100 lb. bright white Mohawk VIA felt cover stock in order to further emphasize the layered texture of John Constable’s painting.

Gilder Lehrman American History Seminars

Supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and co-sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the Council of Independent Colleges, faculty members in history and related fields participate in a seminar focusing on a particular period of American history. The marketing brochures show here are the primary means of advertising the program.

CIC/Walmart College Success Awards Report

Designed the capstone report for the CIC/Walmart College Success Awards program, which helped CIC-member colleges and universities improve their outreach programs for first-generation undergraduate students.

Managed the materials request (for photos, videos, marketing brochures, etc.) and file submissions (1,000+ files) from award recipients. Integrated these files into the report.

Designed site map and front-end website design for the report’s companion website.
