Interior Narratives, Exterior Appearances (2004)
Through the integration of photographs of family members and a narrative about this imagery, this project examined the multiracial history of my family and questioned how one can construct a multiracial aesthetic and present these overlapping, contradicting, and often ambiguous racial parts as a collective whole in art. Presenting myself as a collection of diverse historical narratives asked the viewer to address my entire identity rather than focus on the facets he or she would like to see or those that are immediately apparent.
This video was the opening "menu" screen of the DVD.
Please note: My work is reflective of a moment in time—both personally and technologically speaking. Created in 2004, this project was originally displayed as an interactive DVD within a gallery setting. In order to share the project here, I converted the project into individual .MP4 files in order for you to get a sense of the piece and my film/motion design experience. Those individual files can be viewed below, but some of the original structure of the navigation page is not reflected in its current state. If I were to recreate this project for today’s audience, I would put it on a touch screen device and add the interactivity that way.
